Jennifer Love Hewitt, popular television actress and star of the hit CBS show Ghost Whisperer, has become the subject of harsh criticism these past few weeks. While vacationing in Hawaii with her fiancé Ross McCall, the size 2 actress was photographed in a bikini, and when the photos turned up on the internet, the actress was soon ridiculed for being fat.

A short while ago, I wrote an article for Associated Content titled “Are We Too Diet Obsessed During the Holidays?” I criticized the media's fixation with weight and body image, and suggested that our cultural obsession with overly thin models and actresses sometimes warps our own thinking, and encourages us to go on unhealthy diets.

The recent bikini photos of a size 2 Jennifer Love Hewitt show a healthy, real woman with a curvy shape, not an airbrushed fantasy of what a TV star should look like. Yes, when photographed from the rear (so to speak) in a bikini, Jennifer Love Hewitt has some figure flaws, and her body seems to have some problem areas. But what real woman, of any age, doesn't have a few figure flaws? These imperfections make us human. Despite these perceived flaws, she is a lovely young woman blessed with good health and a strong, healthy, and curvy body.

Unfortunately, this hasn't been the media's perception of Jennifer Love Hewitt. She has been cruelly taunted online, her body in those bikini photos studied closely for every flaw. She has been vilified for being a real woman, with a perfectly acceptable real body.

As I wrote earlier, this is sad and scary. Many young girls (and adult women) follow Jennifer Love Hewitt's career, and some look up to her as a role model. It is disturbing to think that some women who emulate her will take in all the media criticism of her body, and start to punish their own bodies with extreme diets and exercise, in order to starve away their own natural curves.

As we watch what is happening to Jennifer Love Hewitt in the media, we need to ask ourselves this question: If a size 2 isn't good enough, or thin enough, where does that leave those who are a size 12 or a size 14? (which is said to be the average size of women today).

Especially during the holidays, when there is so much anxiety over food, diets and holiday eating, this current controversy is very damaging to women. It will be a tragedy if the criticism of Jennifer Love Hewitt touches off a mass panic about women, weight, and body image.

If any good comes out of this controversy, Jennifer Love Hewitt can be a role model, as she stands her ground and speaks out against the criticism of her body. Hewitt is fighting back, saying that as a healthy size 2, she is not fat. It is refreshing to see that she is comfortable with her body and her curves. Hopefully, this will start a dialogue about body image, and there will be a backlash against those who have tried to humiliate her.

On the bright side, it was nice to see celebrities like Eva Mendes, Anne Hathaway, Kate Walsh, and Julianne Moore, come out in support of Jennifer Love Hewitt. All of these actresses believe in a healthy body image, and they defend the idea that it's okay for women to be curvy. Let's hope that Hewitt doesn't succumb to all the media pressure to be overly thin. She's standing her ground now, but how will this recent humiliation ultimately affect her, both personally and in her career? Only time will tell.

I hope that she doesn't go on a strict diet in response to the recent media circus about her weight. I hope Jennifer Love Hewitt stays strong in the face of all the negativity, and realizes she is a strong, beautiful and healthy woman, just as she is.

Meredith Barnett: Lynn Yaeger Gives Mickey Boardman the Royal Treatment

Writer Lynn Yaeger and Creative Director of Paper magazine Mickey Boardman have a lot in common: front row Fashion Week fixtures and best of friends alike, they also share an affinity for obscure collectibles.

Honestly, it sounds like you are way too anxious to get rolling. You sound young… you need to slow down.

A career, whether its in photography, basket weaving, or computer programming, doesn't happen over night.

Going to college (or univisersity as you call it) isn't your golden ticket. You can't expect to learn everything you need in your career out of a degree. So don't expect to get that from your professors. My God's honest take out of this, going off of how you described your professor… I think you have a DAMN good one. In my experience the best professors are the ones that DON'T give you all the stuff you need. They only give you enough to get your mind rolling in the right direction, the best professors are the ones that make you think on your own… and from your post, it sounds like that is EXACTLY what she is doing. The bad professors are the ones that force feed you information they way they learned it… this results in a very narrow minded education. The thing about college, is you are SUPPOSED to learn on your own.

Take what they give you with a grain of salt, and use it to expand yourself.

Relax, take everything in, stay positive, and don't rush yourself into this…. stay focused on your goal, and you will get there.

David Beckham is most likely going to miss this year's World Cup even after the successful surgery on his torn Achilles tendon on Monday.

See Beckham Injury Video Here

Beckham, 34, suffered the injury on Sunday and flew to Finland for surgery that was done by one of the world's top specialists. His injury occurred during the AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo.

Dr. Sakari Orava, the surgeon who did the operation on Beckham, reports that “So far everything is fine.” He came the through the operation with flying colors.

Even though the repair to his Achilles tendon was done and all went well, the healing process will not allow Beckham to play in the June 11,World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham will start physiotherapy once his foot is out of the cast which will be anywhere from six to eight weeks.

This would have been Beckham's fourth time to play in a World Cup. He is England's most capped outfield player with 115 appearances under his belt.

Beckham's website said on Monday, “I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support,” “I hope to make a swift and full recovery.” England coach Fabio Capello said Beckham not playing in the World Cup was a “big blow.”

Beckham was getting ready to kick a ball in Sunday's Series A match when he suddenly stopped and shouted to the Milan bench “It's broken”.

“He had a total tear of the left Achilles tendon, which is excruciatingly painful. The tendon was totally repaired and he will be facing lengthy recuperation that will lead him to physical therapy in a few months.

Beckham, was on loan at Milan from Los Angeles Galaxy and is due to return to Galaxy in July .

South Africa's fiscal economic stimulus package of 2009 targeted key areas of interest across the domains of government, business and society. The package addressed South African citizens' major concerns of financial security in debt repayments, availability of employment and improvement of social services. Despite contraction of the international market, the package ensured that export businesses were sustained. Local businesses were supported by an increase in household spending, and through government-funded infrastructure projects. The package allowed South African banks to retain their stability. Finally, the government was able to increase its spending in key party policy areas, generating huge public support whilst avoiding debt.

Issue Overview

In response to the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2009, the governments of most major economies introduced a program of spending termed fiscal stimulus. Fiscal stimulus is designed to stimulate economic activity by increasing an aggregate demand for goods and services. This is done in an attempt to prevent the damaging negative effects of economic downturn. South Africa's federal government implemented a fiscal stimulus package, amounting to a total of USD3.7 billion, in early 2009.

Key Social Interests

Despite experiencing such extremes of wealth distribution, at the onset of the GFC the majority of all South African citizens were concerned with the fundamentals of job and financial security, and an improvement in infrastructure and services.

In 2008, as a result of the GFC, South Africa witnessed an alarming increase in household debt due to a series of interest rate hikes, totaling 5 percentage points (Reuters 2009). In an effort to combat defaults on this debt, the federal government included in its fiscal package a tax relief program for individuals amounting to ZAR13.6 billion (South African Treasury 2009). This was also designed to generate an increase in household spending, as further discussed below.

The fiscal stimulus package included a significant increase in government spending on infrastructure projects. This spending, along with an increase in government hires in such areas as health, social work, education and law enforcement, generated an estimated 40 000 jobs in 2009 (South African Treasury 2009). With an unemployment rate estimated to be as high as 23.5% in May of that year (Cohen & Nasreen 2009), the generation of jobs was the primary reason of widespread citizen support for the government's fiscal package.

In an economy where in excess of 70% of GDP is derived from manufacturing and services (Jiyane 2009) and in a nation with developing infrastructure, government support for these areas was also a key social interest. 55.72% of South Africa's entire stimulus package was spent on social protection in key social infrastructure and service areas of HIV/Aids treatment and prevention, housing, education (United Nations Development Programme 2009).

Key Business Interests

South Africa's economy rests heavily on the export of primary resources and manufactured goods. Approximately 60% of South Africa's export products are sold to the United States, European Union and Japan (Jiyane 2009). A contraction in the demand for products from these markets throughout 2008 caused South Africa's economy to decline by an estimated 1.4% (Reuters 2009). Government support to these industries was a key part of the fiscal package. Economic growth is expected to rise by 4.0% by 2011 as South African export businesses regain their foothold in the international market (Reuters 2009).

The fiscal package affected local businesses in slightly different ways. Following the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, household consumption in South Africa fell to an alarming -0.2% (South African Treasury 2009). This had a direct negative impact on the profits of businesses across the nation. However, as a result of the tax cuts discussed previously, household spending is anticipated to rise to 1.9% in 2010 and to 3.2% in 2011 (South African Treasury 2009).

As a part of the fiscal stimulus package, South African federal government invested heavily in infrastructure projects in transport, construction, roads, ports, energy and ICT. In total, the government predicts it will spend ZAR787 billion over 3 years on these projects (Reuters 2009). Such spending resulted in a continuing opportunity for local businesses to generate profit, despite the sharp contraction in public spending.

South African banks, powerhouses in the mineral-rich economy, were key in influencing the government to implement a fiscal stimulus package. They benefited greatly from the package, most notably from the tax cuts that allowed citizens to meet household loan repayments. South African banks remained extraordinarily strong and stable throughout the worst of the GFC.

Key Government Interests

The stimulus package created a number of benefits for the South African government. Primarily, the package gave the government an opportunity to increase spending on HIV/Aids treatment and prevention, housing, and education. Improvement in these key areas underpins the ruling African National Congress party's policies, and generated much public support. The stimulus package also provided an opportunity for increased infrastructure growth, important not only for the general citizens of the nation but for the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup, when the world will be introduced to the 'new' South Africa.

Despite immense spending, the South African government remained deficit-free, avoiding the major problem involved in fiscal stimulus programs.

Nike goes green for this summer’s World Cup Soccer tournament!

Whether you play soccer on a professional team or as part of an intramural sport, or even if you just watch your kids play the sport, you’ve got to appreciate Nike’s new green initiative for this year’s World Cup. The eco-friendly initiative: uniforms made from discarded plastic bottles!

That’s right all you David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo fans! This year will be the first time ever that World Cup players will be sporting these uniforms, which are all made from discarded plastic bottles found in landfills in Japan and Taiwan.
According to an article in Ecouterre: “Each shirt comprises up to eight recycled plastic bottles, a move that reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared with manufacturing virgin polyester. Besides saving raw materials, Nike also diverted nearly 13 million plastic bottles (or nearly 560,000 pounds of polyester waste) from the landfill – enough to cover more than 29 football pitches.”

What a great idea! Here are some pictures that prove recycled plastic bottle uniforms are just as cool as regular uniforms:

And my personal favorite….

All photos from ecouterre

Nike is always coming up with new and unique ways to make a green statement, and I totally support this eco-friendly initiative. I can’t wait to see the World Cup players do their thing in these cool uniforms!

Arsenal football club, are a London club that were formed in 1886. Since, they have won the third highest number of trophies than any other club in England.

Formerly known as Woolwich Arsenal, the club turned pro in 1891 and then took the Woolwich away from the name in 1913. It was also the time when they first started playing at Highbury.

Little was achieved in the early years, aside from a promotion to the English top division soccer. That was until the arrival of Herbert Chapman in 1925. This was undoubtedly a fine coup for the club, and the FA Cup was won in 1930.

With this, a golden era was ushered in for the club when they would begin to dominate the league. Their first league title was won shortly after the FA Cup, and was defended not once but twice to make for a hat-trick of league titles. Further cups and leagues were added during the 30s, with such stars as Bastin playing for the club. Ultimately, the WM formation that Chapman used proved a solid formation.

The golden era, was curtailed in 1939 by conflict. It must be said, that that era has never quite been recaptured but trophies would soon return post-war in the 40s, and then later a first European trophy won in 1970. This was the first real impact they made in Europe. A double in 1971 took them into the European Cup for the first time. Further cup wins and finals would follow in the decade.

In recent times, the 90s saw 6 more trophies, including a Cup Winners Cup and a repeat double in 98. Foreign stars like Bergkamp and Henry were snipped for multiple million deals, as the club showed its ambition. Henry has become the new record scorer for the club, with superb pace and technique.

The new era has seen further trophies added and most note-ably a move to a new 60,000 Emirates stadium. The double of 2002, and then an unprecedented undefeated league winning season saw records broken.

Since 2006, the Emirates stadium has hosted Arsenal home games and enhanced the financial clout of the club to the point where it rivals the likes of Madrid. Undeniably, the Emirates stadium rivals the new Wembley.

Now, playing in this new stadium, Woolwich Arsenal, from a marginal London club are today one of the biggest clubs in Europe with a soccer team that can beat the best on its day. Their trophy cabinet boasts 13 league titles and 11 FA Cups in total along with a couple of European trophies. It should not be too long, before they add a few more trophies.

There is a few great soccer managers who have had a golden touch, who have brought trophies to their clubs or country. Both past and present, great managers.

Herbert Chapman:

Herbert Chapman, the visionary of the 1920s and '30s is regarded to be one of the great managers. With Huddersfield and then Arsenal, he won the league and FA cup on numerous occasions. Arsenal became the dominant team of the '30s, thanks to his management and WM formation. He also advocated such innovations as floodlights and numbered shirts, which are now standard.

Jock Stein:

Soccer's miracle worker worked wonders with Glasgow Celtic in the 1960s. Celtic's domination of Scotland resulted in an unprecedented 9 straight league titles in the era and then a famous European Cup win over the Italian team Inter Milan in 1967. As such, he was the first Scot to win the trophy.

Bill Shankly:

The hero of the kop is credited with laying the foundations for Liverpool's golden decades, in the '60s. Shankly won numerous FA Cups, league titles and a UEFA cup with Liverpool, before handing the reigns to Bob Paisley for further domestic and European trophies in the 1970s.

Bob Paisley:

Shankly's successor, Paisley, won three European Cups with Liverpool. In Europe and domestically, the trophies came and came again to Anfield, as Liverpool beat most that stood before them. Overall, Paisley won more trophies than any other Liverpool manager has.

Sir Alf Ramsey:

Why include Sir Alf? Simply because he is the only England manager to have actually won the World Cup, in 1966. Recalling, that England have had some notable managers like Revie who never actually came close to such a feet. An astute tactician, his 4-4-2 formation has also become standard in English football. Also recalling, his title winning Ipswich team that won the league in their first season after promotion. 1973 aside, England's best ever manager, bar none.

Matt Busby:

Sir Matt Busby was the first Manchester Utd manager to win the European Cup. In addition, during the 1950s and '60s he won numerous league titles and cups for the club. Most famous of his teams, were dubbed the Busby babes. He was also a long-serving league manager. To many, he remains the clubs best manager.

Marcello Lippi:

The Italian manager won numerous league titles with Juventus, as well as a European Cup during the 1990s. Most recently, he won the 2006 world cup with Italy. With such honors won, is one of the best managers of recent times.

Undoubtedly, these are some of the great soccer managers. They have won numerous honours with their clubs or country, and some of the biggest trophies in the game. Aside from this, the likes of Chapman and Ramsey introduced astute tactical innovations like the 4-4-2 and 4-2-4.

Chris Hipkins reported on John Key buying the patron’s position for Football NZ.

Whereas our pool opponents Paraguay have a leading model and actress Dallys Ferreira who describes herself as” more ardent than most” has said she will make love to all of the team if they win the cup. Warning googling her gets a pretty explicit site.

29 year old science teacher, former track star, and IWFL wide receiver Natalie Randolph was just named the country’s first head varsity football coach, at Coolidge High in Washington, D.C.  This means she could not only explain how Belichik ran a slant against man-under coverage while the free safety was cheating, but could also divulge the molecular structure of your Coors-soaked Doritos. Awesome.

A mention of Randolph, however, is incomplete without that of Jennifer Oliveri and Wanda Oates.  In 1985, Oates was named head FB coach at Ballou High in D.C., only to be ousted the same dad-gum week by opposing coaches who didn’t want to compete with a woman. Then there’s our own hometown hero, Hull’s Pop Warner football coach Jennifer Oliveri. She was appointed last year to skipper the boys’ team and seems to love guiding her 7 to 10 year olds just as much as playing. As a kid she played on all-male teams, and like Randolph, Oliveri went on to play pro, for the Boston Militia (see them here on June 5th face Randolph’s old team the D.C. Divas!)

In their compelling 2007 book, Playing With the Boys: Why Separate is Not Equal in Sports, local scholars Eileen McDonagh and Laura Pappano convincingly argue that athletics are the last real frontier of gender inequality in America. Sports, especially pro, help define what we mean by “success.” Politics and higher education throughout history had once been boys-only (and whites-only, for that matter) clubs too, but when you see how that’s changing and how inspirational it can be for generations of young people, you can visualize how positive a thing a black female coach on a football field can be.

Here’s a toast to these courageous broads, with a simple libation that packs a punch.

Cheers!

The wait is almost over, as the soccer matches that will help determine who plays for the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing, Olympics draws near. Soccer (or football as it is called in most of the world) is one of the few sports that will get under way before the Opening Ceremonies of the games even happens, and the excitement will be heard around the world as the matches begin. Soccer will begin play with the women's side on Wednesday, August 6th, and the men's games will start on Thursday, August 7th. These dates are on Beijing time, so keep that in mind when you are figuring in the time differences, as Beijing, China is 15 hours ahead of the Pacific Time Zone in the United States. If you are the east coast of the United States, Beijing will be 12 hours ahead for your scheduling. Keeping that in mind, many of the events shown live will be during the middle of the night, but the main competitions will be re-shown on tape delay through NBC prime-time.

On the first day of competition (August 6th) the women's games will start at 5:00pm (17:00 hours) with three matches being played simultaneously around China. Immediately following those games, there will be another set of games, with a 1 hour break before game 2 gets started. It will insure that every team plays their first game on that day. The following day, the schedule will repeat for the men, except with 4 groups playing at the same times. All of the locations are split up by their groups, with 3 women's groups (each with 4 teams) and 4 men's groups (each with 4 teams) that will play these preliminary rounds to decide who goes into the single elimination rounds leading up to the medal games.

Here is what the Groups will look like:

The Men's Side:

Group A: Cote D'Ivoire (A1), Argentina (A2), Australia (A3), Serbia (A4)
Group B: Netherlands (B1), Nigeria (B2), Japan (B3), USA (B4)
Group C: China (C1), New Zealand (C2), Brazil (C3), Belgium (C4)
Group D: Republic of Korea (D1), Cameroon (D2), Honduras (D3), Italy (D4)

The Women's Side:

Group E: China (E1), Sweden (E2), Argentina (E3), Canada (E4)
Group F: DPRK (F1), Nigeria (F2), Germany (F3), Brazil (F4)
Group G: Norway (G1), USA (G2), Japan (G3), New Zealand (G4)

To determine who would be playing on the Men's side, preliminary competitions were held around the world, and teams had to qualify to get a spot in the Olympics. The split up of the teams came from The Host team automatically qualifying (China), 3 additional teams from Asia, 3 teams from Africa, 2 teams from North and Central America, 2 teams from South America, 1 Oceanic team, and 4 European teams to comprise of the 16 teams.

On the women's side, the 12 teams that qualified for the Olympics were determined from the Host team, 2 additional teams from Asia, 1 team from Africa, 2 teams from North and Central America, 2 teams from South America, 1 Oceanic team, and 3 European teams.

The Competition

Each of the sides gets a world ranking of where they rank compared to the rest of the world, and the draw for groups is actually random. This leads to a number of really good teams being in the same group as others, and could lead to some really good preliminary matches leading up to the single-elimination rounds.

Currently the top ranked teams in the world (on the men's side) are:

1. Spain
2. Italy
3. Germany
4. Brazil
5. Netherlands
6. Argentina

Notable others:

30. U.S.A.
83. China

The top ranked teams on the women's side are:

1. U.S.A.
2. Germany
3. Sweden
4. Brazil
5. Norway
6. Korea

Notable Others:

14. China

The Past

Italy is the defending FIFA World Cup Champions, and definitely have something to prove as the Olympics roll around. France came in second, with Germany third, and Portugal fourth place.

Regarding the 2004 summer Olympics, Argentina took home the gold, with Paraguay taking home the Silver, and Italy winning the Bronze medal respectively. On the women's side, the United States won the Gold, Brazil the Silver, and Germany won the Bronze Medal.

Soccer Schedule

The opening day schedule (August 6th) will break down like this (In Beijing times):

This is life in the new Greece: People are angry and break into riot and any provocation, and the state is poor and will take any excuse to cut costs.

Hooliganism has become such a problem at Greek soccer games that fans were banned from away games. But serious clashes occurred this weekend at three league matches.

The AP reports hundreds clashed on pitch and outside the stadium before a Greek cup game in the northern town of Kavala.

Sports secretary Panayiotis Bitsaxis announced a €40 million cut in state funding for soccer, suspended until the league can reign in its hooligans.

For the Papandreou regime, it's a clever grab of money needed to qualify for the EU bailout. But this is going to really piss off the already-angry Greeks.

The New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC) playoffs roar
into action this weekend with Canterbury United tackling the
reigning champions Auckland City in Christchurch while
Wellington and Waitakere United re-ignite their rivalry at
Newtown Park in the capital.

The ties will be played on a home-and-away basis, and
underdogs Canterbury and Wellington will need to make the
most of home advantage before the Auckland-based return legs
scheduled for April 10 and 11.

Away goals could decide the winner if the aggregate scores
are tied so the first legs could be tense and tight affairs.

Waitakere received the perfect play-off boost after ending
Auckland City's O-League run.

To eliminate the west Aucklanders, Wellington will need every
ounce of the late season form that has seen them edge Otago
United out of the semifinals.

Waitakere have beaten Wellington on all three occasions they
met in past playoffs, but will want to forget their last
visit to the capital when they lost 3-4.

Auckland City finished the regular season as NZFC minor
premiers with one match to spare but suffered O-League
elimination last weekend at the hands of Waitakere so will be
in ruthless mood with the NZFC title their one remaining
opportunity for silverware this season.

Auckland begin a long weekend of football with a catch-up
showdown with Manawatu on Friday.

With two games in three days, Auckland have drafted in seven
new players for Friday's clash with Manawatu, with all eyes
firmly focussed on the semifinal first leg in Christchurch on
Monday.

Veteran striker Grant Young is selected for the Manawatu
match and could be in line for his 100th NZFC career
appearance.

A win or draw for Auckland would see them become the first
team to complete an unbeaten NZFC regular season, but that
will count for little to Paul Posa's team if they come
unstuck in Christchurch.

This time last season, Canterbury fans were reflecting upon a
second consecutive eighth place finish in the NZFC.

Coach Keith Braithwaite has turned his team around and they
are just two matches away from their first grand final since
the 2005-06 season when they lost 4-3 on penalties to
Auckland City.

By Miguel A. Melendez, Staff Writer

La Cañada High School's boys soccer team had two goals in mind – winning the Rio Hondo League title and bringing home a CIF-Southern Section Division 5 crown.

First-year Spartans coach Barry Ritson took it a step further – go undefeated in league.

“They thought they should have won it the previous season,” Ritson said. “They wanted to win league, but I gave them the added expectation to win league undefeated. I thought they were good enough.”

La Cañada did just that, pummeling opponents with a high-octane offense. With immense talent at virtually every position, Ritson had the luxury of running a 4-4-3 formation, anchored by Matthew Cannata and Cameron Meeker.

The junior duo combined for 57 goals and 25 assists, but it was Cannata who quickly developed into one of the more dangerous players in the Valley with 24 goals and 12 assists, helping La Cañada to a Division 5 quarterfinal playoff run.

Cannata's elusive speed, slashing moves and front-attacking power were keys to his being named Star-News 2010 boys soccer Player of the Year.

“Matt's just a nightmare to mark,” said Ritson, whose guidance earned him Star-News Coach of the Year honors. “If you get too tight, he turns you and he's gone. If you give him space you're never going to catch him. His problem was not getting in the right position at the right time, and this year he got to the right places at the right time, which is reflective of the goals he scored.

“He's a very good finisher and runs at people. I didn't see anybody that was more effective than Matt Cannata at that role. In high school soccer you don't find many of them.”

Ritson, who played in Sunderland FC's Youth Soccer Academy in England and at the University of North Carolina, inherited a team loaded with talent. But it was Ritson who believed in the Spartans' talent, to the point he felt comfortable taking away a fourth defender and inserting a fourth forward instead. The message: La Cañada would play to score early and often, and its three defenders were talented enough to shut down the counter.

Meeker, a first-team All-CIF honoree and the Rio Hondo League's Offensive Player of the Year, heads the list of three All-Area forwards. He finished with 33 goals and 13 assists, solidifying Ritson's offense-first mentality.

“(Former La Cañada coach) Jordan Jones did a great job and set the foundation,” Ritson said. “He trusted some of the younger players, and the following year they had the confidence to play better. It was a great base. It was a program that was starting to have a good run and smelled success. I just tweaked it a little bit.”

La Cañada went 18-6-4 last year, finished second in league, scored 67 goals and allowed 26. This season, the Spartans went 23-3-1, finished undefeated in league, scored 95 goals and allowed only 12 with virtually the same team.

In the quarterfinals, the Spartans lost to eventual champion Salesian on a goal in overtime that slipped into the net by a mere two inches. With virtually every player coming back next season, it's easy to see why Ritson wishes it started today.

“Soccer is at the forefront of their mind,” he said. “They already want to know about scrimmages and training throughout the year. It's things like that that keeps it exciting, which is pretty cool.”

Monrovia's Mathias Iba ez and Muir's Victor Lugo are the other two forwards on the All-Area first team.

Ibañez was one of the most feared forwards, finishing with 22 goals and eight assists.

Lugo helped the Mustangs to a second-place finish in the Pacific League, only one point behind Crescenta Valley.

Lugo, who had 23 goals and 10 assists, led Muir to two victories over rival Pasadena and a wild-card victory in the Division 4 playoffs.

Pasadena's Omar Reyes, Maranatha's James Evans and St. Francis' Dante Ramunno are the three All-Area midfielders.

Reyes had 12 goals and eight assists to earn first-team All-Pacific League honors.

Evans earned Alpha League MVP honors after scoring eight goals and 15 assists. He led the Minutemen to their deepest playoff run since a finals appearance in 1997. Maranatha accomplished its goal of winning the school's first Alpha League title in more than a decade.

Ramunno anchored the midfield for St. Francis and earned third-team All-CIF Division 1 honors.

With a stout backline, it's no wonder La Cañada leads the Star-News' list of first-team defenders with seniors Ryan Upton and Diego Ruano.

Upton, who will walk on at Michigan State, earned second-team All-Rio Hondo League honors while Ruano earned third-team All-CIF honors.

The other two defenders are St. Francis' Max Cadena and Pasadena Poly's Matthew Diephius.

Cadena led St. Francis to a second-round appearance in the Division 1 playoffs and earned first-team All-CIF honors.

Diephius, a first-team All-CIF Division 6 honoree, was one of the more prominent defenders in the area, leading Pasadena Poly to 13 shutouts and the semifinals of the Division 6 playoffs, its deepest postseason run in a decade.

Pasadena Poly's Matt Morrish, a second-team All-CIF honoree, is the All-Area first-team goalkeeper. He was a virtual wall and made a name for himself when he single-handedly led the Panthers to a 3-0 victory on penalty kicks over Tahquitz after a scoreless tie in the quarterfinals.

He made one huge penalty save in regulation, stopped three more during penalties and scored one of the Panthers' three penalties to earn the victory.

The first real question when looking at this game is what is it a computer game or more of a soccer management simulation. I should also mention that soccer manager is not a new game that has suddenly appeared over the last few years, but is more an issue of rebranding. Anyone who has followed the history of this game will know that Championship Manager was the original name. The reason for the name change is because the company was split up and now there are two games Championship Manager and Soccer Manager. Most people consider the brains behind the series are Sports Interactive. Now Sports Interactive is now working on Soccer Manager. So if anyone is wondering which is the better game well that's your Soccer Manager.

I realize some people may not know the concept of the game so I will briefly overview it. First of all anyway that may be familiar with similar management titles such as Fifa Manager well Soccer Manager is very different. Games are not displayed as they would be in a Fifa type game, but uses text commentary and statistics. The one note I would give people who are new to the game is give it a chance believe me you can not make a decision on this within minutes you have to get into it. The other thing is if you do get in to you be prepared to give up almost everything else in your life because you just won't want to stop playing. Even when you have achieved all you want at one club there are still plenty of other clubs not to mention the true challenge of international management. I would encourage anyone who loves the beautiful game and who has not yet tried the game to give it a try, but be prepared to give up a lot of your free time. Now to address my main question is it a game or a simulation. For one thing I have never encounted any other computer game that is so accurate and full of so many facts and statists. I would certainly think of it as more of a simulation. Also it just doesn't feel like a game as it all feels so real. I would encourage anyone to try this game. If you are going try this game one big piece of advice is start with a lower league club as the expectations will be lower and success will greatly improve your reputation

Last Wednesday, soccer mecca Nevada Smith's on Third Avenue was shuttered for a day due to alleged underage drinking… The bar reopened Thursday.

Meanwhile, a Nevada Smith's regular shared what has been happening there of late… Kieron Slattery, a longtime popular bartender at Nevada Smith's, was fired by Paddy, one of the two owners. As the regular said, Keiron was fired because he refused to pay the fine the bar incurred — upwards of $2,500. According to one side of the story, Paddy was passing the fine on to the bartenders who were on duty when the summonses were issued. Making matters worse, Kieron was arrested for trespassing when he showed up for work the next day. (One person familiar with the situation said that he refused to come out from behind the bar when asked.)

Now, as a result of Kieron's departure, several longtime regulars are boycotting Nevada Smith's, choosing to watch games at venues such as Central Bar on Ninth Street instead. [Update: Bartender Ken Foley was also fired...]

There is also a Facebook page created for Slattery titled “Pay the Fine! Not Fine the Workers!”

There's an alternate take on all this in a post at the New York Gooners.

Bottom line right now: There's a lot of tension at Nevada Smith's as all this is getting worked out… in addition, those rumors persist that the bar will be moving to a larger location nearby … and that the bar's current location, 74 Third Ave., will be razed…

Update: Sign a petition to reinstate the two bartenders here.

The process to transfer the county-run Klahanie Park to Sammamish has slowed, as King County officials and the Issaquah Soccer Club discuss ways to keep the park open.

As representatives from the soccer club and the county review a potential partnership, Issaquah City Council members decided last week to postpone a decision on a proposed agreement offered by King County. The agreement lays the foundation to transfer the park to Sammamish in the short term.

Officials said the discussion between the soccer club and the county remains in the early stage.

Issaquah and Sammamish officials often suggested the soccer club as a potential partner to keep the park open. King County plans to shut down the park within months if a new operator cannot be found.

Issaquah Parks & Recreation Director Anne McGill cited the 30-year relationship between the soccer club and Lake Sammamish State Park as proof of a successful public-private partnership. The soccer club leases fields from the park and handles field maintenance. The park takes care of other maintenance, such as garbage collection.

“This is a very steady, reputable organization,” she said last week. “They don’t break off and go into splinter groups. Whatever arguments they have within, they solve it.”

McGill briefed Issaquah council members last week at a Council Services & Safety Committee meeting. Committee members postponed discussion on the Klahanie Park proposal until late April. About a dozen Klahanie residents and representatives from the soccer club attended the March 24 meeting.

“You guys have been the only sliver of hope for us, and you really helped us navigate some of these political waters,” Concerned Citizens of Klahanie member Michelle Kolano told committee members.

Although Klahanie borders Issaquah and Sammamish, only Issaquah can annex the neighborhood until both cities rewrite long-term growth plans.

Under the proposal offered by King County, if the county transferred ownership of the park to Sammamish in the short term, the city that eventually annexes the unincorporated Klahanie neighborhood will receive the park as part of the annexation.

The proposal represented a move by King County Parks Director Kevin Brown to address a long list of concerns raised by Klahanie residents.

Concerned Citizens of Klahanie, a residents group, opposed the notion of Sammamish upgrading the facility. Opponents contend changes could alter the character of the park and attract more outsiders and traffic to the neighborhood.

“What I thought the county did well was listen to the arguments we had heard from the residents of Klahanie, which was, that you can’t split us off,” Issaquah Councilman Mark Mullet said.

Meanwhile, Sammamish officials worry about losing money for upgrades and park maintenance in the event Sammamish takes the park in the meantime and Issaquah someday annexes Klahanie. Sammamish leaders raised concerns about the proposal at a March 9 joint meeting of the Issaquah and Sammamish councils.

“As this memorandum is currently written, from my conversations with city of Sammamish council members, they do not have any interest in signing this particular document,” Issaquah Councilwoman Eileen Barber said last week.

The cash-strapped county wants to offload dozens of parks and facilities to save money. The county plans to transfer ownership of 16 parks by June 2011 through annexations of county land by nearby cities. Agreements under consideration and potential annexations could remove another 13 facilities from the closure list.

As the popularity of the sport of soccer increases, so does the number of children throughout the country who play the sport–from novice preschool-age players to top-notch high-school athletes.

Naturally, as more kids play, the number of children who get injured increases as well. In fact, from 1990 through 2003, 1.6 million kids suffered from soccer-related injuries that took them to the emergency rooms of their local hospitals.

That breaks down o 96,200 to 136,600 pediatric soccer injuries annually, according to researchers in the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Columbus Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Their study is published in the February issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Soccer injuries peaked in 2,000 when approximately 2 in every 1,000 children in the U.S. sought emergency care for a soccer injury.

Boys suffered from the most injuries, although over the 14-period of the study, there was an increase in girls getting hurt. Preschool-age children, and they reviewed medical records of children as young as two years old, sustained a higher number of injuries to the face, head and neck.

Overall, the most common injuries were to the wrist, finger, hand ankle and knee. Diagnoses ranged from sprains and strains to contusions, abrasions and fractures.

Tips for keeping your kids safe.

So how can you keep your child safe on the soccer playing field? Follow this advice from SafeUSA.org, a nonprofit organization in Baltimore, Md., dedicated to injury and violence prevention. This group compiled safety tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, and other sports health organizations:

  1. Make sure your child has a complete physical exam from his pediatrician or family physician before the soccer season begins-or before he starts any new season of sports.
  2. Make sure she wears all the required safety gear every time she plays and practices, that includes shin guards and cleats; some programs encourage the use of mouthguards. Boys should wear athletic supporters. All kids should wear sunscreen and have plenty of water on hand.
  3. Insist that your child warm up and stretch before playing.
  4. Make sure first aid is available at all games and practices.
  5. Talk to you child's coach about whether kids are receiving adequate training how to “head” the ball to prevent head and neck injury.
  6. Make sure your child's coach or soccer club is adequately securing movable soccer goals. Goals have been known to tip over causing severe head injuries.
  7. Beware of violent behavior and aggressive infractions on the field. Talk to your child's coach or the referees if you see some offensive, aggressive behavior.
  8. Keep soccer fun. Putting too much focus on winning can make your child push too hard and risk injury.

Averatec 12.1″ 2371 PC Laptop Review

April 1st, 2010 by hecisunp

Apple Notebook and IBM Thinkpad by sophist1cated

Asus G60VX-JX128V 40

After owning 3 different kinds of laptop computers over the last 8 years I have to say that the most aggravating part of owning one is the battery and battery charging system. One of them has gone through 3 batteries so far. Another one, the jack inside the laptop where the power supply connects to is intermittent. It is intermittent to the point of not being able to be used to charge the battery unless the cord is held in place by hand. I wish there was a better way to handle battery charging.

After a frustrating morning of holding a cable in place to charge a laptop up while trying to type – I gave up for the day with that laptop. I then did a search for an external laptop battery charger on the web. I figured that there must be something out there by now. Here is what I found:

There are a few companies that make external laptop battery chargers. These are the types of chargers that you take the battery out of your laptop and connect it to a charger without using your laptop computer at all to charge the battery. This is the type of thing I was looking for. The prices range from several hundreds of dollars to under $70. I did a search on buy.com and shopping.com but did not find a really good price, even eBay had some pricey chargers. The best price I found was from one of the manufacturers themselves at jcbarn.com They had the battery charger at a price that I found reasonable at $65 They have a very wide range of external battery chargers for all different brands of laptop computers.

What I plan on doing is going completely wireless with my laptops. I'll buy another battery for each of them and external battery chargers to match. That way I'll be using a battery while one is charging then I can swap them out as needed. I sincerely hope that it will solve my laptop battery problems.

“Seize the Moment” This is one of my favorite sayings. How often do we take advantage of the MOMENT? The moment is instantaneous. What happens right now will not happen again, ever! Will you remember the moment?

Photography is the art of capturing an image of that moment. It could be a face, a plant or a mountain. It could be something that will be there tomorrow but will look different or it could be something that won't be seen again. I read in a comic book once of a conversation between a father and son. The young son asked his father why old photos were always in black and white and new photos were in color? His father said there was always color film in the old days, but the world was only in black and white then! It was funny but some of our most famous photography “artist” worked in black and white such as Ansel Adams. He and so many others were artists that couldn't make up their work but had to capture it at the right instant of time.

I was going through some photos with my wife the other day. Some of them would take my breath away. They were images captured in time of babies in our family. Some of these babies are now 5, 8, 10, 14, 17 years of age. They are my children, nephews and nieces. Some of them are of my wife and her sisters. They're baby pictures! They are an instant caught in time. They were either taken by my in-laws or given to them as gifts. They may not have been present at the time the photo was taken but they had that image of that instant in time to carry with them until they died. These images were no different than the images that Ansel Adams gave me as a gift when he photographed San Francisco bay where the Golden Gate Bridge is before it was built. He gave me a memory that I could not have had otherwise. My family and my sister-in-laws' families gave my mother -in-law and father-in-law memories that they would never have had if it weren't for photography.

Even if you aren't a great photographer, a picture is still worth a 1,000 words. When a newborn baby comes home from the hospital and the family and extended family come by to see him or her, what comes out? Of course, the cameras come out and start snapping. I learned two schools of thought from photographers that I took courses from. One was in a roll of 36 exposures, 34 better be the top quality photos that you intend to sell. The other photographer taught that in a roll of 36 exposures, expect 2-3 quality photos that are worthy of selling. What I learned from this is spend your time taking posed photos but keep snapping for candid photos.

If you are taking photos of babies or children, take your time for both types of photos. I personally do not like posed photography but that's me. I prefer to capture a child that is at play trying to solve a problem or just being natural. I like the expressions when they are deep in thought or interacting with other children. I found a photo of my son that I took through a car window when he was five holding his hand up with his fingers stretched out. That photo is so memorable to me because I sent it to my mother before she passed away. It was exactly the same photo that my mother took of me when I was five years old.

May I suggest that you seriously consider studying photography to get a better understanding of the capabilities of using a camera properly? If you are just starting out, you need to start with the basics and work from there. Here is a good site to learn various aspects of photography from: http://www.photographytips.com/ For some detailed photography, study someone like Ansel Adams and look at this website: http://www.anseladams.com/

ou know that feeling when you realize you've done something really, really stupid? And then you laugh? Okay, well, I laugh. Which is probably the worst thing. Ever. It's an awful trait I've picked up from my father and even though I try not to, I laugh when I make a mistake. Or do something stupid. Which is often.

A few days ago, I looked at the clock and realized I was late for a class at the gym and worried I'd lose my spot (here in the OC, the perils of losing one's 'spot' at the gym is akin to missing a flight, so hold the hating). I grabbed my gym bag and darted downstairs to catch JD and Polo before they left on a morning walk. No luck. I walked outside to holler a goodbye, but they were nowhere to be found. I ran back inside, grabbed my stuff, and exited through the garage.

When I returned home later, I walked through the garage door into the kitchen and that's when I heard it. Incessant doorbell ringing and rapid door-knocking. I froze in fear. I'm about to get robbed! Oh, yes, because in my world, robbers RING THE DOORBELL. Once I got enough courage to look through the peephole, I saw JD. Sweating bullets.

I opened the door and Polo collapsed at my feet, panting. JD walked passed me and muttered, You locked us out…. And that's when it happened…the thing I hate the most. I laughed. Not in the haha that's-funny kind of way, but in the haha I-can't-believe-I-just-did-that-kind-of-way. But most people only ever hear my laugh as haha. And when you're angry, that's probably the last thing you want to hear.

I quickly apologized, but Polo and JD weren't having it. That's when I brought out the big guns. The words you save for big blunders such as this. It's MY DAD'S FAULT! That's right. In my world (where you lock your loved ones outside in the heat, and robbers ring the doorbell), blaming a parent for questionable personality traits is totally acceptable. And this leads me to this's weeks Kisses+Disses…– Advertisement –

I begin to envision that life as a surf photographer means traveling to exotic beaches, taking photos of girls in bikinis and sipping on fancy cocktails at the end of the day. “No, it’s not all fun and games,” he assures me, “It’s also about waking up before the sunrises, meeting the demands of professional surfers and spending most of your nights editing the photos, writing up articles and cleaning out all your equipment. When you do this for a few days in a row, it does become mentally and physically tiring.”

“I do spend a bulk of my time cleaning out all the equipment at the end if a shoot,” he states, “I think we (surf photographers) work in one of the harshest conditions. Factors like the sand, salt and water wear out camera equipment much quicker and easier.”

“Traveling with all the camera equipment isn’t easy either,” he says. This is quite obvious as I look around the room to see scattered luggage bags across the floor. I try to lift what looks like a lightweight carry-on but can barely raise it more than an inch off the ground. I soon find out that the bag includes a 600mm lens inside, which weighs over 5kg alone.

I ask him how he manages to get on board with excessive luggage without having to pay exuberant fees. “Oh, just a smile and maybe some sweet talk,” laughs Neil, “I was once threatened to be charged nearly 1,000 pounds sterling for overweight luggage at Heathrow airport. I had a chat to the duty manager and made up this elaborate story about how I knew the director of the airline carrier. Fortunately, it worked. It was complete bullshit, but it was good bullshit.”

“Then there are times when everything just goes horribly wrong – like getting all my camera equipment stolen in Mexico. We’re talking about lenses, camera bodies and some personal items. Pretty much everything.”  He pauses before adding, “But it still turned out to be a great trip and Mexico is definitely one of my favorite locations. Having a great time is really what you make out of it. I enjoy going to places that aren’t yet top surf destinations. Sure Mentawai is great, but I like putting in the effort to get to places that are off the beaten path.”

Product Review: Microsoft Notebook Cooling Base

The Gateway CX200X is a notebook PC. No, it’s a tablet PC. Wait, it’s both, because it’s a convertible notebook. The 14-inch (measured diagonally) widescreen notebook easily transforms into a tablet. You have the best of both worlds: switch from keyboard mode to using a stylus. And it’s quick on the switchover. Gateway’s innovative pen includes what they call Continuous Sensing Technology; it lets you take notes, edit and draw directly onscreen. You can also capture and paste images into your documents.

Capture your thoughts directly onscreen instantly with the CX200X. Jot a quick note, write down a phone number, or sketch ideas on the screen. Go wild and be creative. Or snare items from the Web. Copy and paste what catches your eye while surfing the Web, whether it’s for saving to disk or e-mailing. Go mobile with your PC. Ever tried to hold a notebook in one hand and type with the other? Now it’s much easier. The CX200 Series is the right portable PC for use at the office, at home or as a road warrior.

Why not organize your notes like an efficiency expert? Microsoft One Note 2003 is included with any CX200 series notebook. You can create handwritten documents that you can manage and access anytime. And markup documents with ease. Write notes directly on any presentation, such as circling important points, XXXing out unwanted material or doing some creative (or silly, stress-reducing) doodling.

Give everyone a clear view. You can show off your work with this screen that pivots. The CX200 display rotates 180 degrees so you can show everyone your screen. It spares everyone a pain in the neck (unless the boss walks in!). You can edit digital photos like a pro, too. No need to purchase a pricey graphics input tablet. Since the CX200 pen works like a mouse, your favorite editing software is already compatible.

Let’s look under the hood to see what’s there. You get the Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73GHz with 2MB cache), Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Microsoft Works 8.0. Standard RAM is 512MB (2-256MB modules). For storage, it’s a 60GB 5400rpm serial ATA hard drive. Many of us use memory cards, and the CX200X handles most of them. The 7-in-1 media card reader works with Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, MultiMediaCard, Secure Digital, xD Picture Card, Mini Secure Digital and RS-MultiMediaCard. There’s a modular 8X multi-format double layer DVD writer (DVD±R/±RW/CD-RW).

There’s much more. Onboard are a Type II PC card slot, three USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 (FireWire), a VGA 14-inch WXGA TFT active matrix display (1280 x 768 maximum resolution) with a rotating hinge. And the Integrated IntelGraphics media accelerator 900, a full-size keyboard and EZ Pad pointing device with Gateway Executive stylus pen.

If you haven’t used a tablet before, you’re in for a treat. There’s a short learning curve, and then it’s quickly down to business. The tablet offers the PC Input Panel (a writing panel, software keyboard and voice recognition), Windows Journal (handwritten documents quickly convert into text or image files) and Sticky Notes (for quick notes with stylus or voice).

There’s enhanced speech recognition, to get your voice to make commands and be the boss! You set up speech recognition via the Input Panel Tools menu. You can use the built-in microphone, or an external microphone (such as the headset type).

There’s integrated sound with stereo speakers, headphone/speaker jack and mic jack. The primary 8-cell Lithium ion long-lasting battery includes a one-year limited battery warranty. While you probably won’t use it, you’ve got a V.92 56K modem. If you need to tap into the office network, you’ll appreciate the integrated Broadcom 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter.

We tested the integrated 802.11b/g wireless networking card, and it worked just fine. It automatically found wireless access hotspots; there are lots of them around today. The CX200X includes Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0, Google Toolbar, Microsoft Windows XP Tablet (SP2) Backup CD, McAfee Internet Security Suite 90-day trial, Napster trial subscription, TurboTax online tax preparation portal, Microsoft One Note, Microsoft Experience Pack and Microsoft Education Pack. The free Notebook Value Service Plan offers one year parts/labor and one year technical support. If you want it, there’s six months free AOL Internet access.

Gateway has been struggling in the last few years to stay competitive and profitable. Recently the Gateway, Inc. (NYSE: GTW) board of directors named Chairman and longtime Director Rick Snyder as the company's interim CEO, following the resignation of Wayne Inouye (former CEO of eMachines). Snyder, a former Gateway president and COO, will act as CEO until the company finds a permanent replacement. Inouye, who became CEO following the March 2004 Gateway acquisition of eMachines, “resigned to pursue other interests” according to a Gateway statement.

Snyder said, “Thanks to the efforts of the management team and employees, Gateway last year posted its first GAAP profit since 2000, and recognized a $643 million improvement in operating income from 2004, while experiencing an increase in brand awareness and continued positive reception for its products and services from customers and trade press alike.” Since the acquisition of eMachines, Gateway launched a “back-to-basics” strategy of selling only PCs and related products, software and services; their focus is to be among the lowest-cost companies in the industry.

Snyder added: “Gateway’s management team is focused on growing both the top-line and bottom line at rates significantly faster than our competition. We expect to do that by delivering great products with excellent service during and after sale.”

The excellent CX200X and other products in the premium Gateway line are available at major retailers, over the Web and phone, and through Gateway’s direct and indirect sales force. The CX200X currently goes for $1399.99, but check for latest promotions and free upgrades. See www.gateway.com. You’ll be glad you did!

My favorite Fussball-Trikot: Serbien Trikots kaufen

This 2010 FIFA World Cup Travel Guide will teach you everything you need to know about how to make your trip a success. Many soccer fans make the mistake of thinking that planning this type of a trip will be the same thing as planning a normal vacation. If you don't take the time to properly plan a world cup trip then things can quickly turn south if you are not careful. One of the biggest mistakes that World Cup fans make is that they do not purchase their plane tickets ahead of time. The longer you wait to purchase your plane tickets, the longer you are going to be forced to pay. It's probably a good idea to get to South Africa a week early because you won't have to deal with thousands upon thousands of people rushing into the country at the same time. This will also allow you to get tickets for a significantly lower price. Plane tickets will cost you significantly more money if your arrival is only a day before the start of the World Cup.

Another big mistake that world cup fans make is waiting until the last minute to reserve their hotel packages. If you make your reservations earlier then you will be able to save hundreds of dollars on the overall cost of your trip. Most people choose to book their World Cup tickets and reservations online which is smart, but you can easily get scammed. A large number of people get scammed online when purchasing FIFA World Cup tickets each year. There are several different ways that you can avoid getting scammed when purchasing your tickets and reservations. The safest place to purchase your tickets is through the FIFA.com website. There are thousands of sites that are waiting to scam people out there, but if you purchase your tickets through FIFA then you will avoid getting scammed and losing money.

Either way, there are several different things that you can do to make traveling to South Africa significantly easier. Thousands upon thousands of people are going to attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup which is why you need to do everything you can to make your trip a little bit easier. The key to making your trip significantly easier is to buy your tickets a year in advance and make your hotel reservations six months in advance. This will ultimately allow you to save money while making your life easier at the same time.
